About the exhibition

From the materials in our hands to the forces that shape the universe, this exhibition invites makers to explore the theme of Elemental.

The nature of jewellery and metalsmithing evokes the archetype of the alchemist, one who grapples with the elements of earth, fire and water to create objects that can evoke the heaviness of stone or the lightness of air – a process of transformation. Metal’s fluid nature makes infinite forms possible, but the maker must work in partnership with elemental forces to bring visions to reality.

Objects are imbued with physical energy and intent, and traces of the processes and material interactions that were essential for their creation remain present, and often visible, within them. The transformation of metals into objects has often meant that magical powers are conferred to them, deeming them talismanic. This is not only the case in religious or fetish objects, but also for the symbolic expressions of love and sentiment that jewellery often conveys.

From the Elementals of folklore and myth to the hard science of the periodic table, this exhibition invites artists to explore the possibilities of materials to manifest ideas and dreams into physical form.

Artist statement - Eucalyptus Blossom Brooch

My Eucalyptus Blossom Brooch captures the synergy of Earth, Fire, Water, and Air. Sourced from the earth, the metal is transformed through the elemental forces of fire, water, and air. This process of creation brings the essence of the natural world to life, echoing the organic beauty of the eucalyptus tree, while celebrating the elements that shape its form.

The Banksia Pod Brooch embodies the four elements—Earth, Fire, Water, and Air. Using metals sourced from the earth, I shaped the brooch through the transformative forces of fire, water, and air.
